30-year-old Trevor Jacob admitted that he intentionally crashed his small plane.
The incident occurred, in which the YouTube user collided with a small plane between Lombok and Mammoth Lakes in California, USA, and jumped from it with a parachute, in November 2021.
The plane was equipped with several cameras, and in December of the same year, he posted a video, “My plane has crashed,” on Youtube. It has received three million views, according to Los Angeles Times.
Some viewers were suspicious: In the video, you can see that Trevor Jacob was wearing a parachute when the plane crashed. He also took a camera and selfie stick with him when he jumped.
The authorities in California decided to investigate the case. They claim the purpose of the video was to secure a sponsorship deal with a company that makes the wallets.
According to authorities, Jacob lied to investigators: He said he did not know where the plane wreckage was. He is said to have later taken it out and dismantled it CNN.
Trevor Jacob, who represented the United States as a figure skater at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, was sentenced to six months in prison Monday for trying to sabotage the investigation.
He pleaded guilty earlier this year to attempting to obstruct the investigation.
– He appears to have shown very poor judgment when he carried out this crime, prosecutors said in court, according to CNN.
-Maybe he did it to get attention on social media, and to end up in the news, to benefit from it. In any case, they continued, this reckless behavior cannot be tolerated.
In a letter to the judge, Jacob wrote that he was sorry, and that he had suffered several negative consequences after his actions.
-I have done thorough research of the itinerary to ensure that the accident will not occur near houses or hiking trails. However, I never had to carry out the plan, he writes, among other things.
