Volleyball: Sporting defeats Fonte Bastardo and wins the Portuguese Cup

On Sunday, Sporting won the Men's Volleyball Cup in Portugal.

In the final match, the team coached by João Coelho defeated Fonte Bastardo, in five sets (3-2), at the Viana do Castelo Cultural Center stadium, in a match that lasted about two and a half hours and ended with a decision in an exciting match. The “Black Match” was won by the Green and White with a score of 22-20.

The Lions won the first set 25-16, in the most lopsided part of the entire match.

In the second group, the Azoreans, led by coach Nuno Abrantes, responded and tied in the final with a score of 20-25.

Sporting returned to the lead by winning the third set 25-22, but Fonte Bastardo forced the “Lions” by winning the fourth set with the same numbers as the second: 20-25.

After beating Benfica in the semi-final, making this the first final without the Reds since the 2013/14 season (the time when Castelo da Maia beat Fonte do Bastardo), Sporting ended up winning the title, winning the fifth and decisive set.

In a very balanced match, Sporting ended up winning their sixth match point, winning the decisive part with a score of 22-20, after failing to settle the final 14-13, 15-14, 18-17, 19-18 and 19-18. On 20-19. Fonte Bastardo also took two match points (15-16 and 16-17), but failed to reach his second cup title, after 2013.

This is the fifth Portuguese Volleyball Cup won by Sporting, after victories in 2021, 1995, 1993 and 1991.
