On Wednesday, Ljubomir Vejsa announced the end of his professional career. At the age of 36, the Serbian midfielder took to social media to bid farewell with a special affection for his 'beloved Benfica'.
“I've been waiting to post this for a long time. It's still hard for me to say goodbye to football in terms of the game, but it's time for it. It's not easy to say goodbye after almost 20 years of playing,” he began writing on Instagram.
“I would like to thank the clubs I played for. Work, perseverance, discipline, and love have led me to always be the best version of myself. Hajduk, Partizan, Olympiacos, Al-Ahly, my beloved Benfica, and the Serbian national team will remain in my heart forever. The Olympics were a special experience.
Vejsa also thanked everyone who accompanied him throughout his career, from family, friends, coaches, employees and players, but special thanks to the Portuguese: “Football had a special magic with you. “My best years in football were with you.”
Finally, the former Benfica player revealed that he will be leaving the field, but admitted that now is “the beginning of a new career in football, in a different role.”
The midfielder trained at Hajduk Kula, the club where he made his debut, and also played for Partizan, Olympiacos, Benfica, Alaves and Al Ahly Jeddah. He represented the Eagles between 2013 and 2019, having won five league championships, two Portuguese Cups and three Super Cups.
