The New York Times wrote that Austin traveled to Ukraine by train from Poland. During the visit, he is scheduled to meet, among other things, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other military leaders.
The visit comes just over two weeks before the US presidential election and three days after President Joe Biden attends a meeting in Germany to discuss further support for Ukraine.
– Austin said at a NATO meeting in Brussels last week that the United States is determined to stand by its allies and partners for a long time to come.
Meanwhile, Russia regained control of territory in Kursk occupied by Ukrainian soldiers, and intensified its air strikes against Ukraine.
Attack on Kharkiv
At least 12 civilians were injured in a Russian missile attack on Kharkiv on Sunday evening, according to local authorities. Among those bombed were residential complexes, garages, gas stations, homes, and cars.
The attacks led to power outages in parts of the city, according to police and Kharkiv Governor Oleh Senegubov.
Russia carried out such attacks over the past two winters in an attempt to tighten matters on the civilian population and thus increase pressure on the authorities.
– Staying in shelters
On Sunday evening and Monday night, several rounds of airstrikes were also reported on the capital, Kiev. The head of the military administration in Kiev, Serhij Popko, wrote on the Telegram application that about ten drones had been shot down.
City Mayor Vitali Klitschko said shortly after midnight on Monday that the air defense was working.
– Stay in the shelters, Klitschko wrote on a telegram.
At least one man was injured as a result of debris caused by falling drones.
In Kryvyi Rih, southern Ukraine, three people were injured and several homes were damaged in a missile attack on Monday night, according to Kryvyi Rih Mayor Oleksandr Vilkol. The city is the birthplace of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Attacks were also carried out in Russia. Two people were injured in Ukrainian attacks against the Russian Belgorod region, according to the governor of the Russian Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov.
