- If Donald Trump wins the presidential election, he could avoid punishment for the crimes he is accused of committing.
- Prominent attorney Norm Eisen believes Trump has had incredible luck with the legal system.
- Another prominent lawyer, George Conway, believes that Trump fears he will end up in prison if he loses the election.
CHICAGO (Dagbladet): – Trump is a kind of genius at avoiding punishment, avoiding responsibility, the well-known lawyer and former US ambassador to the Czech Republic, Norm Eisen, who is now associated with the Brookings Institution think tank and works as a legal commentator for CNN, among other things, tells Dagbladet.
Eisen attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week, and argued forcefully that the judge in the hush-money case should rule against Trump as planned in September, and not wait until after the election as Trump himself wants.
Just before the summer, the Republican presidential candidate was convicted on 34 counts of bribery. In order to cover up an alleged affair with porn actress Stormy Daniels, just before the 2016 election, he allegedly paid her hush money and then forged employment documents to cover up the amount.
According to Eisen, the former president has had unparalleled luck in all four trials so far. If he wins, he will likely walk away from all cases without consequences.
Trump interrupts electorate meeting: – Call the doctor
“I have never seen such an astonishing ability to avoid responsibility in our legal system,” Eisen says.
During the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week, many referred to Trump as a convicted felon, who is now running against former Attorney General Kamala Harris.
In addition to the bribery case, Trump is also charged in three other criminal cases. However, Trump can escape the consequences in any case, especially if he wins the election.
– Closer to prison
Prominent conservative lawyer George Conway thinks so, too. He was previously married to former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, but he has become one of Trump’s most vocal critics himself. He recently started the Anti-Psychopath PAC, a political action committee working to prevent Trump from winning the November election.
The former president is believed to be panicking after Kamala Harris entered the Democratic nomination.
– Not only is Trump losing the battle every day, and not only does he not know how to deal with a woman who celebrates normalcy. Conway says she is getting the praise and applause he so desperately wants MSNBC.
-Who will tell him?
Trump is also believed to be afraid.
– He realizes he's much closer to ending up in prison because that's the whole reason he's here. Conway says he wants to avoid prison.
– Lots of luck
Eisen is a good friend of former President Barack Obama, having both attended Harvard at the same time. He also served as the White House ethics chief under Obama. But he also worked with Trump during the transition when Trump became president in 2016.
He was then appointed by the House of Representatives as counsel during Trump's first impeachment trial.
“We’ve never had a defendant as fortunate as Donald Trump. The most serious of the four criminal cases involved classified documents. He had boxes of documents. If I had one of those documents and stored it in the toilet, I would be in prison now,” Eisen says.
– Trump was lucky to get Judge Cannon. She is one of the worst and most pro-Trump judges in the country. She dismissed the case.
The other federal case against Trump concerns his role in the deadly attack on Congress on January 6, 2021. The Supreme Court stepped in there, delaying the case for at least seven months, making a trial before the election impossible.
“We may have a mini-trial after the Supreme Court told the judge that it could hold a hearing on whether Trump has immunity, and whether the coup attempt is covered by presidential immunity,” Eisen says.
Three lightning strikes
But it didn’t stop there. Trump is also being sued in Georgia for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. There, the state’s attorney, Fani Willis, ended up in bad weather for having an affair with her second-in-command.
– And who could have imagined Fannie Willis? She had an affair with her second-in-command and blew the case off the rails. Lightning struck three times. Eisen says the only hope for holding Trump accountable is the bribery case.
It is believed that Trump will be sentenced to prison in the bribery case.
-But he won't serve a term during the election campaign. Eisen says the anchor will come first.
-It's going to get worse.
afraid of chaos
Eisen now believes this year's election will be between democracy and dictatorship, between a former prosecutor and a convicted criminal.
I have known Harris for many years.
– I met a very talented young prosecutor in San Francisco in December 2007. I have known her ever since and followed her career. Eisen says she is very well prepared to take over as chief.
However, he fears that the situation could become chaotic after the election – especially if Trump loses, but refuses to concede defeat as he did in 2020.
– A lot will depend on the margins. If it's too even, it'll be chaos again. That's why it's important that he loses by a wide margin, says Eisen.
