The Joe Biden administration has found a solution that will allow it to ban all Chinese cars on American soil within three years: The United States intends to ban all Chinese technology on board cars sold in the country, in what is the first phase of the American plan.
The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday proposed banning key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on U.S. roads over national security concerns, a move that would effectively block Chinese cars and trucks from entering the U.S. market, Reuters reported.
The White House has raised concerns about the possibility that Chinese vehicles could collect data on American drivers and infrastructure, and about possible foreign manipulation of internet-connected vehicles and navigation systems, after opening an investigation in February.
The proposed ban would prevent Chinese manufacturers from testing self-driving cars on U.S. roads, and would extend to software and hardware in vehicles produced by Russia, which could extend to other U.S. adversaries.
The planned regulation would also force the U.S. and other major automakers to remove Chinese software and hardware from vehicles in the United States in the coming years.
Although China is angry about the increased tariffs on its car exports to Europe, these duties are completely prohibited in the United States. The US government has already hit the Chinese auto industry hard with additional border duties of 100%.
The standard has the peculiarity of prohibiting the approval and sale of cars equipped with Chinese technology. But they don’t have to be Chinese for that! In fact, a European, American or Japanese car with Chinese software will also be prohibited. This first stage of the closure will arrive in 2027.
Three years later came the second phase of banning vehicles equipped with Chinese electronic equipment. The US government is rolling out its strategy to give manufacturers with Chinese parts suppliers time to recover. But from 2030 onwards, the door will be completely closed to “China Automobile”.
However, the World Trade Organization has already declared the feasibility of such a trade policy.
