The Tesla Group is still king and king in the electric car market in Portugal. The North American brand recorded another 867 units in May, thus increasing the score to 3,246 units since January. That’s a 448% year-over-year increase compared to 2022, giving the company founded by Elon Musk a national stake of 23.6%.
The Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) released monthly data on Friday showing that in May, sales of electric passenger cars recorded a growth of 157.1% compared to May 2022. Behind Tesla, by a significant distance, is now Volkswagen (Volkswagen). which overtook BMW for second place. The difference between these two German brands is small, only 40 units (1111 versus 1071, respectively).
But it’s an important performance, especially for VW, which in 2022 was only 14th in the tram market in Portugal – while BMW had already finished that year in third place (behind Tesla and Peugeot).
So the Wolfsburg logo jumps to the Portuguese podium, with a share of 8%, practically doubling in five months of 2023 the number of electric units sold in the whole of 2022 (1111 vs. 558).
Since January 37,360 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (BEVs). Connect in (PHEV) and hybrid electric (HEV). A year ago, that amount was 22,030. There are more than 15,000 units, in five months, which well reflects the change in preferences that is taking place among consumers.
It also means that new BEV, PHEV and HEV vehicles registered this year account for 36.8% of the 101,510 vehicles registered this year in Portugal so far. While the global market accelerated by 40.4%, electric calls grew by 70.4%, almost twice the pace of growth, when considering the market evolution of electrified light cargo vehicles and electrified heavy vehicles (both with very little expression, valued at 2% and 0.3% respectively) .
BEV purchases posted the second-best month of the year in May, approaching the highest value on record of 3,549 units in March. Tesla has topped the monthly charts since February, after Dacia topped the BEV chart in January.
