Who said we need a common registry for doctors and hospitals? Neither us nor the GPs, writes three senior doctors. Photo courtesy of St. Olaf’s Hospital in Trondheim.

The system is old, time consuming and not very friendly.

This is the topic of discussion. Any opinions expressed in the text are the responsibility of the author. If you’d like to participate in the discussion, you can read how here.

On November 12, St. Olaf’s Hospital will adopt a new electronic patient record, called the Health Platform, provided by the US company Epic System Corporation. The whole process is reminiscent of HC Andersen’s fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.

Epic has introduced a very old, time consuming and user friendly system. Despite the exercises and the courses: we rub our eyes and struggle to see how we will find the time to take care of the sick. We met “everything is different in the final version” and “you shouldn’t judge until you practice (an incredible amount)”.

Tailors imitators in the fairy tale sew and cut in the air. “It’s just because you’re stupid that you don’t realize how beautiful this cloth is, and how wonderful the clothes would be!” After a while they demanded more money and silk for the job.

Epic’s system costs were originally NOK 2.3 billion, but these costs have been increased by NOK 1.5 billion in consulting fees.

loot and loot

Did the emperor need new clothes? Who said we need a common registry for doctors and hospitals? Neither us nor the doctors.

The dream of a “one citizen – one record” that would reduce interaction distractions anyway was shattered when the Epic scoring system was chosen in 2019. The dream from 2010 didn’t get any better with choosing a program from 1994.

General practitioners don’t want a system for loot and pamphlets. A GP crisis, with a huge shortage of doctors, will turn into a disaster with Epic!

We’ve been in the hospital for our Doculive approx. 2000. Documentation is easy and intuitive. It is connected with other systems that we need. Communicate with general practitioners and nursing homes electronically. Short summaries of relevant information exist in medicine, as elsewhere in society, and are the most effective way to convey information.

Other hospitals outside of Helse Midt-Norge have a Norwegian-made plunger. New Dips Arena new version inserted In the southeast health to approx. 3 billion kroner less.

Little happened with ICT

We have pointed out the dangers of using the health platform: we have to treat fewer patients, efficiency and production go down. Waiting lists are growing, and this leads to a loss of prognosis for patients.

The shortcomings created by Epic’s diary-writing system are well known and reported among others Denmark And the Finland.

Little has happened with ICT since the 1990s. Our smartphones demonstrate the evolution since then. It’s similar ease of use we wish for, and yes, we know Doculive already has it!

So, we were basically at that time. Sorry to say it, but NOK 3.8 billion is out the window!

We don’t have to try!

A child shouted, “He has no clothes!” The emperor shivered, because he thought they were right. He had to endure the spectacle and carry himself even more proud.

We tried to talk! Epic takes the money and returns to the adventure city “Intergallactic”. But it’s useless for clothes to be expensive when they can’t be used.

So: realize the common mistake before you lose lives! We don’t have to try! Dear Helseplattformen: Epic has been well tested and criticized all over the world! You have worked together for three years. There are no clothes now either!
