The Texas Chain Saw Massacre It was launched in August with the mission of adapting the horror movie universe Texas Chainsaw Massacre For asymmetric multiplayer – eg dead in broad daylight, Friday the 13th And other games based on the slasher horror movie.

Developed by Sumo Digital, the game does not add anything new to the formula and fails even to arouse the nostalgia of fans of the movie. The events of the game take place at the same time as the first movie, but we will not be dealing with classic characters. In fact, only Leatherface, the chainsaw freak, is truly known, as he could not be missing in any way.

General gameplay

Texas Chain Saw Massacre features gameplay in the style laid out in Dead by Daylight. That is, the matches involve two teams, one of the survivors and the other of the killers. Unlike in 505 Games, the assassins here are Leatherface’s family of cannibals, each with a specific skill, but that doesn’t differentiate the enemies very little, unless you’re the big guy with the chainsaw.

By the way, the only breath of authenticity is playing with the family. This is because one of its goals, in addition to eliminating the survivors, is to collect blood to feed the ancestor character. When fed, it develops powers that make it easier to locate survivors.

As a huge fan of the movie that inspired the game, I feel compelled to comment on the context in which the first Texas Chain Saw Massacre movie was released. At a time when the slasher genre wasn’t quite as popular, director Tobe Hooper offered a visceral, near-realistic experience and the quality of the setting the film had.

When playing The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, there is no hint for this setting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a well designed game in the sense that it doesn’t have any bugs and has very functional gameplay, with a decent soundtrack and all the rest. However, you’ll be playing something that’s been seen many times before and without a soul, something the original feature had, and with leftovers.

Ever since the announcement of Dead by Daylight-style Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I’ve been wondering what authenticity the title will bring. And that’s because we’re not talking about a movie like Evil Dead that got a game in the same style. In the case of the second, the mythology of the universe itself brings details of the originality that the Massacre da Serra Elétrica no longer exists today, in the year 2023.

After all, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre could have been a more detailed DLC for Dead by Daylight (which it did, in a distant season of the game), not very different from the game that inspired it.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is included in the Game Pass catalog.
