According to the Health Department of Goiás (SES-GO), dengue cases in the first five weeks of 2024 exceeded records set in the same period in 2022, when the worst of the epidemic occurred in the state. Compared to 2023, the same period in 2024 saw an increase of 70%.
According to the ministry, four deaths due to dengue have been confirmed so far, and there is an average of 10 hospitalizations per day in the state. There are currently 29,630 cases of dengue, of which 11,923 have been confirmed.
According to the Undersecretary of Monitoring and Comprehensive Healthcare, Luciano Carvalho, in December 2023 there were 84 hospitalizations in state units, while in January 2024 there was an increase of more than 300%, with a total of about 212 hospitalizations. In February, as of Thursday (8), 83 hospitalizations had been recorded.
The Undersecretary warned, “We have noticed a rapid increase in the number of hospitalizations. As hospitalizations increase, the number of deaths also increases.”
Emergency
Goiás declared a public health emergency after the state, for four consecutive epidemic weeks, had an incidence of suspected dengue cases above the threshold specified in the government's emergency plan for Arboviruses. According to the state government, the decree allows for necessary measures to be taken to prevent hospitalizations, serious cases and deaths.
The country also established the Dengue and Arbovirus Crisis Office, a temporary structure for analysis, decision-making and control, responsible for fully managing the situation during the crisis. In it, managers, care managers and area managers make decisions about the situation.
