Political scientist Thomas Homer Dixon warns that democracy in the United States could collapse. He claims that there is a danger that the United States will become a right-wing dictatorship by 2030.
The Canadian professor painted a disturbing picture in one Chronicle In the Globe and Mail on New Year’s Eve.
It refers to developments in the United States over several decades and to the era of Donald Trump as president. According to Homer Dixon, Trump’s claim that he actually won the 2020 presidential election is “a powerful anti-democratic poison.”
The professor believes that “Trumpism” glorifies violence and increasingly resembles fascism. He compares developments in the United States today with Germany before Adolf Hitler came to power.
Homer Dixon expresses grave concern about what will happen next if Trump is re-elected in 2024. One possible scenario is a weakening of democracy that paves the way for a subsequent authoritarian leader.
– By 2030, if not earlier, the country can be ruled as a right-wing dictatorship, as stated in the article.
Other scenarios are described here as well – such as the gradual fragmentation of right-wing populist forces in the United States and the gaining of less power.
Homer Dixon is director of a research center at Royal Roads University in British Columbia. In the article, he asks the Government of Canada to form a cross-party committee that can continually monitor developments in the United States.
