Between Thursday and Saturday (May 23 to 25), more than 330 young scientists will gather at the Alvandega do Porto Convention Center for the National Science Fair, organized by the Youth Foundation.
The competition will include more than 110 scientific projects by more than 330 young scientists from various parts of the country, accompanied by more than 60 teachers. It is joined by more than ten international projects from Brazil, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg and Mozambique.
Scientific projects selected from the National Competition for Young Scientists and Researchers are presented in eight categories – ranging from exact sciences to social sciences, including engineering and biotechnology. Among them, there are proposals for a tree-planting robot, a solution that uses polluted waste in marine ecosystems to produce construction materials or even a space engine built with traditional materials.
During the National Science Fair, projects will be evaluated by a jury of experts, coordinated by the Ciência Viva agency. There are prizes worth around 100 thousand euros, including financial prizes, experience prizes – such as participation in internships in R&D centers or mentoring by experts – and international prizes, whose winning projects have the possibility to travel and represent Portugal at the international level. Science competitions (i.e. in the United States, China, or Brazil).
In terms of financial prizes, there will be five prizes awarded to participants (ranging from €1,250 for first place to €400 for fifth place).
Besides the competition, during the three days of the event, the National Science Fair will also host conferences and panel discussions on various topics, including science communication, the future and frontiers of humanity, or the human mission, with dozens of guests. The event opens to the public on Thursday, May 23, between 2:30pm and 7pm. It will be open on Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free admission.
