The Imprisoning Effects of Human Trafficking

In September 2022, two young Brazilian women disappeared. Their families, as well as the FBI, searched across the United States for them. All they knew was that the women were allegedly staying with influencer Cat Torres.

She has now been sentenced to eight years in prison. The reason? Human trafficking and slavery against one of the women, the BBC writes. The site also has sources saying that the other woman is suing Torres.

Another young woman, said to be a previous victim of Torres, told the BBC about her experience. She is also said to have provided crucial assistance to authorities in their search for the two Brazilian women.

This woman says that Torres comes across as someone who has successfully navigated a series of life experiences. A kind of picture of success who came from poverty and somehow ended up in the Hollywood stardom.

– She has appeared on the covers of numerous magazines, and has been seen with celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio. The woman says that everything she saw looked completely legitimate.

Furthermore, she explained that the relationship with Torres became increasingly strained. The woman suffered from increasing psychological isolation, and eventually moved in with Torres to be her permanent assistant. Duties included working as a cook, laundry assistant and pet sitter – for a salary of around NOK 20,000 per month.
