The Department of Epidemiological Surveillance (diving) confirmed on Thursday (8) the fifth human case of yellow fever in Santa Catarina in 2021. The 59-year-old is residing in Santa Catarina. Sao Bonifacio, In Grande Florianópolis. He was admitted to Nereo Ramos Hospital in the capital.

Yellow fever is an acute febrile infectious disease. In the wild, mosquitoes of the genus Haemagogus and Sabethes transmit the virus. In the urban cycle, the virus is transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Brazil has not recorded urban yellow fever since 1942.

Monkeys, which live in the same wild environment as mosquitoes, are the first victims of the disease.

The main symptoms of the disease are: sudden onset of fever, chills, severe headache, back and body pain, nausea and vomiting, weakness and fatigue, abdominal pain and jaundice.
