The dangers of nuclear war

British security adviser Stephen Lovegrove says the “back channels” that kept the world safe during the Cold War have disintegrated.

He is now warning of the growing danger of nuclear confrontation with Russia and China.

In a speech in Washington at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, he said he believed that the deterioration of contacts with China and Russia had increased the risk of a “rapid escalation into a strategic conflict,” according to him. Watchman.

Lack of mutual understanding

— Lovegrove said on Wednesday that the two homogenous Cold War blocs, the Soviet Union and NATO, had managed to reach a common understanding of the doctrine absent today.

He said that mutual understanding helped ensure that the world did not fall into nuclear conflict during the Cold War.

– It gave us a higher degree of reassurance that we would not misjudge our path to nuclear war. Today we do not have the same basis with others who may threaten us in the future.

According to Lovegrove, the conflict in Ukraine is also “a manifestation of the larger unfolding competition” over what comes after the post-Cold War world order.

– He added: We are entering a dangerous new era, referring to the proliferation of advanced weapons and cyber warfare.

Toxic

Relations between the United States and China are very tense. On Thursday, Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met for the first time. They talked for more than two hours.

Relations between the two countries are still marked by the trade war started by former US President Donald Trump. Last week, China responded strongly to plans by prominent US politician Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan.

At the same time, many experts are now warning about the scope of the conflict.

– The relationship is very toxic now. The lack of confidence has never been worse. I don’t think people understand how dangerous this moment is, Bonnie Glaser, an expert on China at the German Marshall Fund in the United States, tells Reuters.

must stop

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made new statements last week regarding the war in Ukraine.

— Lukashenko told AFP that the war in Ukraine must stop if a nuclear war is to be avoided.

He also believes that Ukraine can end the war by entering into new talks with Moscow and Putin.

– They can end the war by starting talks again, accepting the demands, says the President of Belarus – also known as Belarus.
