The couple’s punishment prompts the commission to ask Instagram to revise its nudity policy

sÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) – A couple consisting of a trans man and a non-binary person posted two photos to a joint Instagram account with nipples showing, one in 2020 and the other in 2021. Both were removed by the social network, flagged as explicit content . On Tuesday (17), the Meta Censorship Committee canceled this oversight.

The independent body has the function of making the final decision on posting content to Facebook and Instagram. The resolution recommended that Big Tech revise its policy on nudity and sexual activity to respect human rights and avoid gender discrimination.

Meta has 60 days to decide whether or not to comply with the Board’s guidelines. If he accepts, he may have to overthrow the censorship of female nipples on Instagram, the object of protest on social networks.

In its decision, the censorship committee stated that banning images showing female nipples is ambiguous. Today, breasts can only be pictured on Instagram and Facebook to represent breastfeeding and gender confirmation surgery.

“This approach makes it confusing about how the rule applies to intersex, non-binary, and transgender people, and requires content reviewers to quickly make subjective judgments about gender and gender, which is impractical when moderation is done on a large scale.”

The committee was not clear whether it was recommending the abolition of the ban on female nipples. He states, however, that the policy of adult nudity creates barriers to expression for women, including cisgender women.

The decision was distributed with the hashtag #freethenipple – Free the nipples with free translation. Women use the password to claim the right to post photos to Instagram and Facebook of their naked torsos, as do the men.
