FAPESP Agency * – With the aim of helping university students and market professionals in the field of data science, Prof Andre Carlos Ponce de Leon Ferreira de CarvalhoThe Director of the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (ICMC) at the University of São Paulo (USP), São Carlos, launched the book Data Science – Fundamentals and Applications (LTC Publisher, 2024).
The work covers the entire sequence of a data science project, starting with the basic and necessary concepts of statistics, information collection and processing, feature engineering, modeling and examples of modern applications. The book covers basic concepts, but in a practical way.
“What distinguishes the book is that it provides an overview of the main data science topics with a practical approach, without requiring prior knowledge, with a short introduction to the Python language and codes to apply the concepts covered. Its importance lies in the fact that to date there is no book in Portuguese that does this,” says Carvalho, who is also a researcher at the institute. Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences for Industry (CeMEAI), Research, Innovation and Publishing Center (It will annihilate) is supported by FAPESP and based at ICMC-USP.
It is also recommended to work in other areas of mathematics and engineering. The book collects examples of codes written in Python, which are also available online to enhance the knowledge gained.
Due to its introductory nature, it is suitable for undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals in related fields looking for specialization, and can also be used in collaborative data science projects.
“It is a book for both a first-year undergraduate student in data science or artificial intelligence, students in courses with introductory data science material, and professionals who want to know what data science does and are interested in learning its basic concepts,” the researcher adds.
Data Science – Fundamentals and Applications It contains 376 pages and can be purchased in print and digital formats on the website Jane Group website. In print form, the book costs R$159, and R$111 as an e-book.
