Emirati cyclist Tadej Pogacar won the 111th edition of the Tour de France on Sunday, after clocking the fastest time in the final stage of the time trial between Monaco and Nice.
The Slovenian has claimed six wins in this year's edition of the Tour and is the eighth rider to achieve the feat of winning the Giro and the Tour in the same year.
Pogacar, winner in 2020 and 2021, and runner-up in the following years, today confirmed his latest victory ahead of the Danish Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), the twice “dethroned” champion who finished second in 06.17 minutes and the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step), who finished third on his Tour de France debut, in 09.18 minutes.
Portuguese João Almeida, who made his Grande Boucle debut and was Pogacar's teammate, made history by finishing his first edition in fourth place overall, after finishing the time trial in fifth. In this way, he became the first to finish three Grand Tours in the top five, and the second-highest Portuguese rider ever in the race, after Joaquim Agostinho, who finished third in 1978 and 1979.
The yellow jersey also celebrated his victory in the sixth stage of this edition, being the best in the 33.7 km time trial between Monaco and Nice, which he completed in 45.24 minutes, to drop Vingegaard to second place with a time of 01.03 minutes, and world champion Evenepoel Specialized to third on 14.01.
