In December last year, lawyer Jaime del Burgo revealed that Queen Letizia had an extramarital affair. At the time, she was already married to King Felipe of Spain. According to Flash!, the king was determined to end his 10-year marriage to his wife, but backed down.
Felipe reportedly felt “disappointed and humiliated” after discovering Letizia’s alleged infidelities. “He had no desire to keep the marriage. I was determined to formalize the crisis that had been real and ongoing since 2013,” the portal added. “The king had no doubts. The divorce really had to happen.”
«The Spanish monarch was forced to back down. The fact that Jaime del Burgo – Letizia's former son-in-law and alleged lover – decided to tell everything led to a change. A huge wave of solidarity rose around the queen. All public statements against Felipe VI's wife were defined as a “male” conspiracy, the site wrote.
As Flash! explained, “women began to protect” Queen Letizia, and if King Felipe insisted on the divorce, “his image would be damaged.” The news added: “So the Zarzuela Palace would have considered it better to abandon the plan that had already been set.” Initially, the divorce was supposed to take place in November.
