South Korea: – Opening the flight door: – That shouldn’t be possible

A man was arrested and several others were taken to hospital after the plane door was opened during a flight in South Korea on Friday.

A man in his thirties opened the door a few minutes before landing. At that time the plane was still at an altitude of more than 200 metres. The man reportedly felt nervous and trapped and wanted to get off the plane quickly.

Video footage from the crash shows the cabin being full of wind and the occupants grabbing onto the armrests to hold on.

One aviation expert describes it as a very strange accident.

– Technically, it shouldn’t be possible to open these doors on the plane, he says Aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas in Airline Rating to CNN.

The plane landed safely in the big city of Daegu. An investigation is underway into how to conduct routine maintenance of the aircraft.

According to the expert, the A321 can land at a speed of about 277 kilometers per hour. He thought that with the wind at such a high speed, it should be impossible to open the door.

– It seems inconsequential that the door could be opened in the first place, and with such air resistance is technically impossible. But somehow it happened, says Thomas.

The responsible airline, Asiana Airlines, states that the door can be opened at a lower altitude.

– The aircraft automatically adjusts to regulate the pressure in the cabin based on the aircraft’s altitude. When the plane is high in the air, it is impossible to open the door. But at lower altitude and close to landing, the door can be opened, the airline tells CNN.
