Solar PV in Brazil grows by almost 50%

Solar panel installation increased 50% in the first half of 2021

In Brazil, there has been a significant increase in demand for solar panels, with the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul topping the list with the highest installed capacity for solar power generation.

This demand for solar panels is due to the high prices of electricity, so many are looking for clean and cheap energy, with solar panel installation growing nearly 50% during the first half of the year.

Many Brazilians have seen their electricity bills go down after installing solar photovoltaic panels on their roofs… So families who used to pay around 500 reais (€80) are now paying 82 reais (€13).

Of the 50% of these new installations, about 80% are residential customers. Thus, in total, between January and June 2021, almost 1.5 million kilowatts were installed, which allowed to supply electricity to more than 180 thousand properties per month!

Brazilian states with bigger investments in solar panels

The Brazilian states with the largest investment by families were the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio Grande Sul, while Ceará leads the way in the northeastern region.

This is reflected in corporate sales of Renewable energy. For example, a company in Fortaleza, which was selling about 500 solar panels a month last year, now sells about 2,000 solar panels a month.

“We expect this market to continue to grow frankly as it has for another five or ten years. The capacity that we have installed, even for the entire energy matrix, is still very small.

So 75% of the market today isn’t big companies, it’s not big industries, it’s residential systems,” said Mario Viana Commercial.
