Each trio loses two positions in Sunday’s race due to a pit-lane incident
George Russell (Mercedes), Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) were penalized on Friday with two places on the grid for the Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. There was an incident that occurred in the pit lane, and a British Mercedes driver was the main culprit, as his car was almost stationary when leaving the pit lane during the first part of the race.
George Russell, the last driver to win the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, will start eighth on the grid, having been sixth fastest in Friday’s qualifying session at the Autodromo José Carlos Pace, known as the Interlagos circuit. . Frenchmen Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, both Alpine teammates, will start in 14th and 15th positions, respectively.
Those who ultimately benefited from all of this were Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz Jr., Kevin Magnussen and Alexander Albon. Both the Briton from McLaren and the Spaniard from Ferrari moved up one place due to Russell’s penalty, and will therefore start from sixth and seventh respectively. The Danish driver from Haas and the Thai driver from Williams move up two places (from 14th to 12th and from 15th to 13th) due to penalties applied to the two Alpine cars.
