Samsung wants to break records in thickness with its next foldable smartphone

Samsung has just launched the Galaxy Z Fold6 in Portugal. The book-shaped smartphone has arrived in the Portuguese market and is thinner than its predecessor, measuring 12.1mm when folded and 5.6mm when unfolded. It is still far from the smartphones that achieve better numbers in this area.

However, there is already talk of Samsung’s next-generation foldable device, where the South Korean tech could be a surprise. According to KED Global, Samsung’s CEO wants the next generation of foldable smartphones to stand out in this space, as he wants an “ultra-thin foldable smartphone.”

Samsung CEO wants a foldable phone as thin as the S24

When we talk about “extra thinness,” this is no small feat. It seems that the CEO asked his engineers to develop a smartphone as thin as the Galaxy S24. Remember, these devices range in thickness from 7.6mm in the base model to 8.6mm in the Ultra version.

Given what is currently known on the market, if Samsung manages to launch a foldable smartphone of this type with a thickness of 8.6 mm when closed, it will be the thinnest foldable smartphone in the world.

Honor Magic V3 is the world's thinnest foldable smartphone

So far, this title belongs to the Honor Magic V2 in the Portuguese market. The smartphone was launched in our country earlier this year with a thickness of 4.8 mm when unfolded and 9.9 mm when folded. But Honor is already going beyond that.

Last week, the Chinese manufacturer introduced the Magic V3 in China. This device reduces these values even further. It is only 4.4 mm thick when open, while it is 9.2 mm thick when closed.

For now, this smartphone is exclusive to China, but it could be presented to global markets in September during another edition of the IFA exhibition in Berlin. In fact, there last year we discovered the V2, which will win the Innovation Award at the 4gnews Awards 2023.

As for Samsung, if these claims are confirmed, its upcoming foldable smartphone could be 3.5mm thicker than the current one. We'll see if that happens.
