Russia could use biological weapons for possible assassinations – VG

New York/Oslo (VG) During a meeting of the UN Security Council, Russia claimed that Ukraine has a biological weapons program. The United States believes this is a lie. They believe that Russia can now use biological weapons in the Ukraine war.

We believe that Russia can use chemical or biological means to support tactical military operations. We transparently share what we know with the world. We’ve been right more times than we’d like.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said this during the UN Security Council meeting on Friday.

She added that US authorities believe Russia could use these for assassinations as part of a premeditated incident or sham operation.

Unsubstantiated allegations of biological weapons

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, several extraordinary meetings of various UN bodies have been held. This is the first time that Russia, which exercises its veto in the council, has requested a meeting.

During the meeting, Russia spent much of its speaking time spreading unsubstantiated allegations that the Ukrainian military and government were building biological weapons programs — with the support of the United States, among other countries.

When the decision on the Biological Weapons Convention was made, we hoped that the world would get rid of biological threats from humans – after we understood the dangers of using biological weapons and stopped developing them. Unfortunately, we have reason to believe that these hopes were not fulfilled, said Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia during the meeting.

The United Nations is not aware of the biological weapons program

Russia also claimed that Russian special operations discovered biological weapons programs carried out by Kyiv with the support of the US Department of Defense.

Among the undocumented claims are that Ukrainian laboratories have studied the possibility of a dangerous bacterial and viral infection spread with birds, bats, parasites, fleas and lice.

In the introduction to the Security Council meeting, it was reported that the United Nations was not aware of biological weapons programs.

– so annoying

Thomas Greenfield asserted that she made her arguments based on Russia’s current and past statements.

She also stressed that Russia’s recall of the UN Security Council meeting could be part of a potential false flag incident:

– Russia has a history of false accusations of other countries because of the violations it is committing itself. It is very disturbing, the UN envoy said.

Thomas Greenfield did not provide evidence of the allegations against Russia, or that the incident was imminent.

I will say this once. Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program. There are no US-supported laboratories – not near the Russian border or anywhere else.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Sergei Kiseltsya, said during a Security Council meeting that Russia’s comments might indicate that it was planning “another horrific operation”.
