The National Science and Technology Week Exhibition, held this week, saw a display of a project carried out by students from a school in the Varzia neighborhood of Recife. The students were the only representatives from the North-East region at the event, and were invited by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation after winning the Ciência Jovem 2022 for their work “The Smallest and Biggest Problem in the World”.
The research led the students to investigate the presence of microplastics on Boa Viagem beach. The classes collected samples using devices developed in the classroom, where they analyzed the occurrence, types, and sizes of microplastic debris present, as well as identifying parts of the beach where microplastics appear most frequently.
The work was shown at the 28th Ciência Jovem Fair, 2022, where it won first place in its category. It is worth noting that the project was also presented at MOSTRATEC – the International Science and Technology Exhibition, in Rio Grande do Sul, where this year it received an invitation from the Ministry to participate in the exhibition.
Under the theme Basic Science for Sustainable Development, the National Science and Technology Week Exhibition aims to bring together works in the field of scientific research in basic education in Brazil.
