The second day of competition on the Portuguese stage of the main circuit of the World Surfing League (WSL) was marked by big and heavy waves, but also a new attendance record at Praia de Supertubos, in Peniche.

There were 51,000 fans who filled the beach to watch a real surfing “show” (spectacle) live, on Sunday full of action and drama, as the number of people present at the “Theater of the West” constitutes a new historical limit, revealed the organization Lusa.

The elimination of Portuguese Frederico Moraes, North American Kelly Slater, 11-time world champion, Hawaiian John John Florence, two-time champion, or Brazilian Philip Toledo, defending champion, were among the highlights of the day, which began with the spring. The sun’s rays ended in a thick fog.

The race started very early, with a run-off, with Kikas saying goodbye with an accidental defeat to Kelly Slater who was eliminated in the next round and left in the air the strong possibility of not wearing Lycra to compete in Portugal.

Even with the force of the sea bringing the competition to a halt, and with the fog threatening its resumption, the crowd didn’t drop their weapons, and rightly so, because once the boards slid again for the ‘Round of 32’, surfers showed why they were the best in the world, no matter what conditions they face.

MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the third stage of the WSL’s main circuit, kicked off on Saturday after three days of waiting for the best conditions, and runs until March 16th.
