Dourados primary care professionals, such as nurses, pharmacists and physicians, participate in the “Update for Tuberculosis and Leprosy” programme, implemented by the Reference Center for Tuberculosis and Leprosy (CRTH). The project, which started in mid-April, continues until May 25 and aims to promote and share knowledge and behavior with professionals in the municipal health network, in the face of new cases of both diseases, based on current protocols and guidelines.

This permanent education project has the support of the Strategic Program Coordination, Health Surveillance Department and Primary Care Department of the Municipal Health Secretariat. The meetings are held at the CRTH headquarters, installed in the PAM (Medical Care Unit).

Tuberculosis and leprosy are neglected infectious diseases that have had a significant impact on patients’ morbidity, mortality and quality of life. Although they can be prevented, treated and even cured, they are contagious and infectious diseases, endemic on a global scale, and stand out because they continue to pose important public health problems worldwide and locally.

decentralized services

The activities to combat tuberculosis and leprosy have been decentralized in the municipality of Dourados for about 14 years. Since then, after training the teams in the local basic health units, all actions related to both diseases, aimed at promoting, preventing, protecting, rehabilitating and restoring the health of the population, through diagnosis and treatment, are carried out by UBS with technical support from CRTH.

Although Dorados has seen important developments in its indicators and procedures for tuberculosis and leprosy control since the decentralization of the program, it is necessary to introduce pedagogical procedures based on the problematic work process, generate reflection on practices in service, update service protocols and standardize procedures.

According to the organizers, making this modernization should provide an improvement in managing the quality of services, with constant focus and attention in searching for new cases, through early diagnosis and treatment.
