On Thursday night, just hours before a visit by Sofia, Spain's emeritus queen, a shot was fired inside the Champalimaud Foundation headquarters.
It all happened in the restaurant area, and it was a security guard who alerted the police after hearing the shot. A PSP source told the Observer that an employee of the establishment later found the projectile.
After the arrival of the agents, all those present were identified, and there are currently no suspects. The case is now being investigated by the judicial police, and at the moment, the authorities have ruled out any connection between the shooting and the visit of the honorary queen to Spain. The incident did not result in any injuries.
Honorary visit of the Queen to Lisbon
The mother of King Felipe VI is in Lisbon to chair the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases, which is being held in the capital (from September 19 to 21) and which coincides with World Alzheimer's Day, celebrated on Saturday the 21st. These congresses have been organized since 2013 by the Queen Sofia Foundation, of which she is honorary president, along with the CIEN Foundation. This year, it is also organized by the Champalimaud Foundation.
Queen Sofia of Spain is scheduled to speak on Saturday, between 12 noon and 12:30 pm. The field of neurology is of particular interest to the wife of Spain's Juan Carlos, a field that has grown in recent years due to the deterioration of her sister's health.
Princess Irene of Greece, Sofia's younger sister, suffers from a degenerative disease, although the Royal House has not specified exactly what it is. However, in recent times, the deterioration of the princess's physical condition has been noticeable and she currently moves around in a wheelchair, as seen during her last public appearance, in August, during a family holiday in Palma de Mallorca.
