Epidemiological Alert – Increased Dengue Fever Cases in the Region of the Americas – February 16, 2024

Considering the behavior of dengue recorded in the first weeks of 2024, with a dramatic increase in cases reported in several countries of the Americas region, followed by a year in which the highest number of reported dengue cases in recent decades was recorded in the Americas. PAHO/WHO reiterates its call on Member States to intensify efforts and actions to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito (the main vector of transmission), as well as to continue surveillance, diagnosis and timely treatment of dengue cases. At the same time, it is recommended to take the necessary measures to organize the health care service network to facilitate access to appropriate treatment for patients, to avoid complications and deaths associated with this disease. It is also important to enhance communication campaigns to increase community participation in reducing mosquito breeding sites and seeking timely medical care.
