The 94th Hollywood Film Academy Awards honored CODA, the American version of the French film “The Bélier Family” (2014), and directed by Jane Campion.
However, the party was marred by a clear slap from Will Smith to Chris Rock on stage, in front of millions of spectators around the world.
“CODA – In the Rhythm of the Heart,” the first film exclusively released on digital platforms (Apple TV) dedicated to Hollywood, won two more statues, with thanks naturally in sign language for Best Supporting Actor, Deaf Troy Kotsur, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
A musical is currently being prepared about the story of a deaf family in which only one child was born with all five senses and a talent for music.
New Zealander Jane Campion won her second Oscar for “The Power of a Dog” after winning an Oscar for the screenplay “The Piano” in 1994.
The new Campion movie entered the red carpet as the most nominated, with 12 nominations, but came out with just one small statuette.
The remake of “Duna” wrapped up tonight with the highest-grossing movie in this edition of the Oscars, with six figurines, bringing “O Poder do Cão” back into the background.
Portuguese-Canadian Luis Squeira was again nominated for Best Wardrobe, for a film directed by Guillermo del Toro, this time for “Nightmare Alley – Beco das Almas Perdidas”, but again lost the statuette. In 2018, he was with “The Shape of Water”.
slap to chris rock
Will Smith and Jessica Chastain won best performance awards as “King Richard Beyond Game” actor Moment of the Night fell into an apparent on-stage feud with Chris Rock.
Smith took the stage and appeared to be assaulting the presenter for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s wife. The eternal “Prince of Bel-Air” will be recorded a few minutes later, laughing once more into his place among the audience, as if it was a spectacle.
However, social networks did not let the moment pass and gave strength to the idea that it could have been a real friction between Smith and Rock, confirming the fact that the actor made two fatal mistakes when he demanded that the presenter not refer to the name of the woman whom Rock called “J” Jane” in the joke.
Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from apoplexy, a disease that causes hair loss.
Between theories of theatrical representation or real friction, the debate is now divided between the boundaries of humor and violence in response to a bad joke made by a professional comedian.
The Hollywood Academy will try to stifle any reactions or comments from those in attendance about what happened between Smith and Rock, allowing the controversy that has overshadowed tonight’s award winners to continue.
The academy said on social media that it “does not tolerate violence in any form” and tried to restore the spotlight to the winners of the night.
In a statement carried by the BBC, the Oscars organizer revealed that a “formal investigation” into the alleged “incident” had been opened to “further explore the actions and consequences” of the case, under California law.
