On National Science and Investigator Day, professionals are reflecting on their craft — ACN

July 8th is National Science and Researcher Day. To celebrate this date, we asked four winners of the Fapesc Research Award – 2022 Edition – Fritz Müller four questions about the importance of their craft.

The Research Award, organized by the Foundation for Research and Innovation of the State of Santa Catarina (Fapesc), aims to honor and reward well-known researchers who have made a significant contribution to scientific and technological research, the training of human resources in their fields of knowledge and the advancement of the ecosystem in science, technology and innovation (CTI) in the state Santa Catarina.

Check out the researchers’ answers.

Why is it important to be a researcher?

André Louis de JasperProfessor of Botany and Biogeography at the Blumenau Regional University Foundation (FURB), laureate in the Young Investigator category – Biological Sciences.

“It is very important to look at the training and the research group that is working. Since the researcher will hardly work alone, he will work in a group and in a network. It is important to show your students that you are looking for improvement, that you go to conferences, participate in seminars, workshops, events, Nationally and internationally, so that you can be part of large research networks. And so that he can show what he does, collaborate with others and bring other people to cooperate with him. Thus, it will have a performance for the formation of people and its own formation. Because knowledge is always going on. ”

What is science to you?

Mirian CarboneraProfessor of the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences at the Community University of the Chapecó Region (Unochapecó), Laureate of the Distinguished Researcher Award – Humanities category.

“For me, it is a human being, which has a rigorous and verifiable way of knowing reality and must be at the service of the well-being and development of human societies.”

What are the other career paths for the researcher?

Marcos Vinicius Viana da SilvaUniversity Professor of Law and International Relations courses at Univali and Director of Intellectual Property at the Innovation Center of the University of Vale do Itajaí (Uniinova), Laureate of the Young Investigator Award – Applied Social Sciences category.

“Since my graduation until my PhD, I have sought the interdependence between the market and the university. I come from the field of legal sciences, and through industrial and intellectual property, I have always wanted to understand how innovative ideas, processes and products can be brought to the market. […] I would say to other researchers: Realize how relevant what you’re looking at is the market, how much demand there is in the market. And if you can create that bridge, sometimes it is not very difficult, to protect your idea, to sell knowledge, then you will be able, in addition to being a professor and researcher, to manage something very important, and also to be listed on the market and paid. Because your idea leaves the field of the university and is related to the field of industry.

What is the importance of science and therefore the work of a researcher in the daily life of people?

Nathan BadwinProfessor and Researcher in the Department of Chemical and Food Engineering at UFSC, Winner in the Young Investigator Category – Engineering category.

“Science is present in the daily life of each of us. I can cite, for example, the COVID-19 pandemic as a practical example of how science can use the knowledge accumulated over centuries to solve complex problems aimed at improving the quality of life for all of humanity.”
