A successful combination of action and strategy and a light and fun storyline, Minecraft Legends is Mojang’s latest attempt to expand the world of the popular brick-and-mortar building and survival game.

Blackbird Interactive, the producer responsible for the game, has done a great job of bringing real-time strategy elements into the world of Minecraft, and of simplifying and introducing expensive concepts of the original game, such as numerous creations and exploration of randomly generated worlds, to players who may have never touched Minecraft before.

This mix of different genres is done in a simple way and even with a certain amount of information in the blocks of text and voice messages that pop up on the screen, it’s easy to get to know them and learn how to do things. It doesn’t take long for a player to fend for themselves in Legends – which is great, because they have the freedom to explore and decide for themselves how to deal with the dangers of the world that come with the fun and wonder the game can offer.

Each game campaign spawns an entirely new world, with different biomes, creatures, and villages. Treasures, magical towers and lost gems await players who decide to explore every nook and cranny, as well as some amazing landscapes, new pets and other surprises. A sense of discovery has always been a mainstay of Minecraft and even in a more focused experience like Legends, it’s great to see the possibilities (and visuals) these worlds can offer.

Attack and defense

In Minecraft Legends, the player is a hero tasked with the task of expelling the notorious pigs, an army of evil little pigs from the underground world, who are bent on invading the landscapes of the upper world, home to humans, wild animals, and other creatures. – Creepers, zombies and skeletons. It is up to the player to protect the villages of these peoples (yes, you can ally with former enemies and lead them in combat), drive out enemy forces and build defenses; It also invades and explodes the bases that pigs build around the world.

The player performs the basic commands of real-time strategy games: gather resources (automated), manufacture combat units, and build towers, walls, and other defensive installations. During combat, you have to issue commands to your troops, which is done very efficiently with a controller (I played this game on Xbox Series X, once the game hit Game Pass). At the same time, the action takes place freely, as the game closely follows the hero, who rides on cool mounts while attacking enemies with his sword. The action never stops for the player to issue commands, which makes everything more exciting – and believe me, sending out reptiles to blow up the pigs never stops being fun.

This gameplay loop is pretty cool and the missions are not necessarily difficult. It is necessary to heed the advice of the three NPCs (Premonitions, Action and Knowledge) or explore the pages of the hero’s diary to discover some things that are not indicated directly on the screen. Since everything has been dubbed and translated into Portuguese, players of all ages can enjoy playing the game.

Minecraft Legends is a fun – and more focused – introduction to the universe Mojang created

Interestingly enough, the game’s campaign is the first of many “Legends of Minecraft”. It didn’t really climax with the big war or invasion that was shown in the opening scenes, maybe that will happen in the future. or not. Other stories will be released in later updates. The Lost Legends tab warns that the game will receive new adventures every month.

It’s a different path than that taken by Minecraft Dungeons, a fantastic world-based RPG from Mojang, which has received several expansions in the form of paid DLCs. Perhaps the game will get paid expansions, but it will also offer free content – a great way to keep the community engaged for the foreseeable future.

There’s also a versus mode, where two groups of four players on each side battle it out on the ground – there’s a group of pigs on the way, but the real threat is the other team, which has the same resources and units as the other team. your. Versus mode matches are longer than I would have liked, but they’re a good change from the main campaign.

Minecraft Legends combines several game genres in a simple and fun way: the game brings action, real-time strategy, and a story that is both unimpressive and uninteresting. And most importantly, it is a good portal for young players in the RTS genre and for other players in the universe created by Mojang.

Minecraft Legends is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is included in the Game Pass catalog.
