Meet the AirPower prototype that Apple canceled [vídeo]

We need to go back to 2017 when Apple introduced AirPower to the world. This was a wireless charger that held the promise of charging three devices simultaneously, no matter which charger area they were placed in.

It was arguably the “wet dream” of many Apple users, allowing you to charge your iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch simultaneously. Unfortunately, Apple would end up canceling the product for not meeting the company’s “high standards.”

Apple AirPower video inside and out revealed

Giulio Zumpetti, a rare hardware collector from Apple, was able to obtain a prototype of the product. He shared pictures of himself on the social network Twitter, as well as a video of him holding an iPhone prototype with the animation in question.

In a conversation with The Verge, Giulio Zumpetti said this unit was purchased from tech waste sources in China. “The unit does not have an exterior finish and this beautiful and heavy stainless steel structure appears,” he told the above-mentioned flyer.

Since it is a prototype, it does not work with the iPhone sold in the market. The unit we see in the video is also a prototype, and it took some work to ship it.

The idea of AirPower is what you want in a wireless charger: to be able to charge devices anywhere on the charger. Apple’s product hasn’t come forward, but manufacturers like Xiaomi have already released improved versions of this idea (albeit not globally).
