Apart from the Sun, the Moon is the clearest celestial body visible from Earth. It orbits the Earth at a distance of about 384,000 kilometers, sometimes slightly closer to the blue planet, and sometimes it is farther away. This is due to the elliptical shape of the orbit, which is generally the law for celestial bodies in the gravitational field. On the other hand, perfect circular orbits are rare. What is a full moon?
The optimal shape of the Earth’s orbital ellipse is more or less affected by confusing effects. For example, the Earth’s plate is the result of the distant gravitational effects of the Sun and the planets and a random mass distribution within the Earth’s interior. Below the Earth’s surface, the Earth’s mass is evenly distributed, so some parts of our planet’s gravitational pull are slightly stronger than others.

At 3,476 kilometers in diameter, the Moon is the fifth largest of the 205 moons in our solar system. Jupiter and Saturn’s moons are only three of Titan’s four largest moons. Earth’s satellite is significantly less massive than our blue planet and exerts only one – sixth of Earth’s gravitational pull. If a man weighing 60kg stands on the moon, he feels like he weighs 10kg so he can jump further and further.
Only one side of the moon is always visible from the Earth’s surface. This is because the celestial body orbits itself exactly once once it orbits our planet. Soviet lunar explorer Lunik III radioed the first images of the back in 1959, but at Christmas 1968 when the Apollo 8 crew orbited the Earth’s orbit, people saw with their own eyes the side that was moving away from Earth.
The moon can sometimes be seen as a crescent, sometimes half, and sometimes a luminous, complete disk. “The moon is called the full moon when its side facing the earth is facing the sun, so it shines fully,” said Dr. Manfred Gaida, astronomer and research partner at the German Space Center (DLR) in Bonn-Oberkassel. “Most of the time, the Moon is just above or below the plane of the Earth orbiting the Sun.” The full moon is only possible at night because the moon and sun must be on opposite sides of the earth. Thus, the full moon rises on the horizon as the sun sets on the other side.
How many times does a full moon occur?
The so-called phases of the moon have determined the lives of people for centuries. For example, they formed the basis for agricultural activities and the division of the year into months. Special powers are also said for the full moon. For example, Christmas trees cut during the full moon should keep their needles for a very long time.
The full moon is one of the four phases of the moon. The sun and the earth’s mates stand opposite each other. Seen from the surface of the earth, they are in opposite directions. The satellite orbits our planet in an elliptical orbit and returns to its initial position relative to the Sun after about 29.5 days (more precisely: 29 days, 12 hours and 43 minutes). Astronomers also refer to this orbital variable period as the lunar or synodic period.
The duration of the moon is usually measured from one new moon to the next. This can vary by more than three hours compared to the previous lunar cycle, with more than 13 hours of variations in a decade. The average value of the Moon is 29.53 days and is also called the Synodic month. The full moon returns approximately every 29.53 days.
