VToday, many people paid their last respects to singer Marco Paulo, whose funeral took place on Friday at the Cathedral da Estrela in Lisbon.
The urn containing the singer's body is located in the Basilica's Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church and will be moved to the central nave of the Basilica, where Mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m., which is open to the public.
In the Basílica da Estrela there are many books of condolence and wreaths, including one from the Portuguese government, another from Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and from several fans.
At approximately 1:15 p.m., traffic on Praça da Estrela was moving unhindered.
After the celebration of the Eucharist, the funeral takes place in the Prazeres Cemetery, a journey that takes about twenty minutes.
Many people mourned the singer's death and pointed out the connection between his songs and his personal life.
Marco Paulo, 79 years old, died in the early hours of last Thursday, at his residence in the municipality of Sintra, on the outskirts of Lisbon, after leading a career that spanned more than 50 years, marked by hit songs such as “Ninguém, Nobody.” “, “I've got two loves” or “A wonderful heart”, among others.
Marco Paulo was born in Murau, in the Évora region, and had the stage name of João Simão da Silva.
Last Friday, the House of Representatives unanimously approved the vote of condolence presented by the Speaker of the Republic on the singer’s death.
The vote, signed by José Pedro Aguiar Branco, said that Marco Paulo “had a long and fruitful artistic career, with more than five decades and 70 albums released.” It should also be noted that he has become “one of the leading names in Portuguese songwriting”.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, awarded the singer the Infante D Medal. Henrique in May 2022.
