League Cup: In 11 games, only one match had more than a thousand fans

The first round of the League Cup group stage has yet to be completed, but 11 of the 16 matches have already been played and the trend is now towards very low passing.

The numbers do not leave much doubt: only Estrella Benfica, which played on Sunday, in Leiria, was attended by more than a thousand spectators. There were 6,899 fans at Estádio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa.

Six of the matches that were actually played did not even reach 500 spectators. Not to mention, of course, the Leixes-Oliveirense game that was played behind closed doors.

It must be remembered that the 2022/23 edition of the League Cup had an atypical bout in the calendar, this time, with the group stage reserved for the time when the league was suspended, due to the World Cup.

Recently, at the conclusion of the Presidents’ Summit, the president of the League, Pedro Proensa, revealed that the project includes reducing the League Cup to the “final four”, starting in 2024, and eventually playing it abroad.
