It is said that at least 226 people were imprisoned or went missing in Kherson while the city was under Russian occupation. Many were said to have been tortured, and five were said to have died in prison or shortly thereafter, according to a report by Yale University, republished by Reuters.

The BBC spoke to Oleksandr Maksymenko, 69, who is said to have shared a cell with 15 other men. They were allegedly beaten, tortured and given electric shocks. The temperature in the cell is said to have reached 40 degrees, and they are said to have been forced to learn the Russian national anthem.
