Kamala Harris received 49 percent support in a poll conducted Washington Post and ABC News.
That's two percentage points higher than Donald Trump's 47 percent approval rating.
It also works better against Trump than its boss, President Joe Biden.
He has the support of 46% of voters, the same number who say they would vote for Trump if the election were between the two.
The poll was conducted before a press conference on Friday evening, where Biden confused Kamala Harris with Donald Trump.
Secret surveys
according to The New York Times The Biden campaign is also conducting its own polls on how Kamala Harris would fare against Trump.
The poll will be conducted this week. According to the newspaper, this is the first time Biden's team has conducted a poll to see how Harris will perform.
NBC News writes That campaign polls can be used to convince Biden that he is not the only one who can beat Trump.
Clear favorite among Democrats
The Washington Post poll raised several questions about Kamala Harris. On the open question of who should be the nominee if Biden drops out, she clearly has the most support:
- Kamala Harris got 29 percent
- California Governor Gavin Newsom Gets 7 Percent
- Michelle Obama gets 4%
- Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Gets 3%
- Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer got 3 percent.
On another question — whether they would be “happy” if Harris replaced Biden as the presidential nominee — she has overwhelming support.
Seventy percent of voters who identify as Democrats or independents and are likely to vote Democratic say they would be “satisfied” if it were Harris.
Among black Democratic voters — a group that is among the party's core constituencies — 85 percent say they are “satisfied.”
Overwhelming majority against Biden
President Biden can't find much reason to smile about the numbers in the comprehensive poll.
Eighty-five percent of those surveyed said Biden is too old to serve another four years as president. Meanwhile, 60 percent say Donald Trump is too old.
Two out of three voters think Biden should withdraw his nomination.
Even among his own people, Biden is finding no relief. Fifty-six percent think he should drop out, while 42 percent want him to continue his campaign.
These are the answers in a poll taken before he confused Ukrainian President Zelensky with President Putin and Harris with Trump last Friday night.
