Titanic was released in 1997 and has become one of the biggest hit movies of all time. However, the fate of Jack, the main character, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, caused a lot of controversy, since it is believed that he could also have saved himself over the wooden door after the shipwreck. Director James Cameron guarantees that remaining human would be impossible.
The legendary floating door scene is a reference to the Titanic movie. For many years, fans believed that Jack could have survived if he had stood on top of the wooden door, along with Rose, the character played by Kate Winslet.
In an interview with Postmedia, director James Cameron admitted that he commissioned a scientific study to “finish this whole thing once and for all.” The goal was to prove that Jack could not have escaped death from hypothermia in the Atlantic Ocean, since the door was only supporting the weight of Rose, who managed to survive the drowning.
Cameron explained that a full forensic analysis was ordered from “the hypothermic specialist who reproduced the scene from the film”. Guinea pigs “having the same body mass as the actors and sensors on all parts of the body” were used. Guinea pigs were placed in ice water and many tests were done to see if they could survive through a variety of methods. “The answer was no. There was no way both of them could survive. Only one could be saved.”
According to the film’s director, DiCaprio’s character had to die, because “that was the point of the story. Just like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love, sacrifice and death. Love is measured by sacrifice.”
