An outbreak of bird flu recently killed thousands of cranes in northern Israel. Farmers in the area need chickens for mass slaughter.
More than 5,200 cranes have so far been found dead in and around Lake Hula, and the situation is not under control, Ori Naveh of the Israel Park and Nature Agency said Monday.

Israel’s Environment Minister, Tamar Zandberg, has described the outbreak of bird flu as the most serious damage to wildlife in the country’s history.
The extent of the damage remains unclear, she wrote on Twitter.
A spokesperson for Hola Lake National Park said their staff are working hard to remove bird carcasses as quickly as possible to prevent the spread of disease.

A spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture stated that farmers in the area are slaughtering more than 500,000 chickens in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.
Cranes are migratory birds, and each year about half a million cranes pass through Israel on their way to Africa. Some spend the winter in Israel rather than head south. This year, it is estimated that about 30,000 cranes spend the winter in Israel.
