Israel attacks targets in southern Beirut – NRK Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

On Wednesday morning, black smoke billowed between buildings in the Haret Hreik neighborhood after the attack.

Shortly after the attack, the Israeli army said it had hit one of Hezbollah's underground weapons depots. At least two attacks were carried out.

– The Israeli army raided a strategic weapons depot belonging to Hezbollah, which was stored in an underground warehouse in a suburb of Beirut, Israeli army spokesman Avichai Adraee wrote. X.

The bombing occurred before six o'clock Norwegian time. It has been less than an hour since Adraee posted a warning on the X website asking residents of a concrete building in Haret Hreik to evacuate.

– You are close to Hezbollah facilities and interests, signed the official spokesman, Adraee X.

Haret Hreik is a known hangout for Hezbollah.

The United Nations called for an investigation

Israel recently attacked several targets in southern Beirut. But this is the first attack in several days, Reuters wrote.

The previous attack was on Thursday of last week. It affected the highly populated neighborhoods of Al-Nuwairi and Al-Basta. The United Nations then called for an independent investigation.

UN spokesman Jeremy Lawrence told reporters on Monday that among the 22 dead were 12 women and two children.

In total, Israel issued evacuation orders for a quarter of Lebanese territory. About a fifth of Lebanon's population of 5.5 million people have been displaced.

The United States criticizes Israel

Over the past year, more than 2,300 people were killed and 11,000 others injured in Lebanon. Most of them in recent weeks, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

The United States says it does not support the way Israel carries out its attacks on Lebanon.

– Regarding the scale and implementation of bombings against Lebanon in recent weeks, we have made clear to the government of Israel that we are concerned and opposed to that, Matthew Miller, US State Department spokesman, told reporters on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Israel and Hezbollah have carried out a number of attacks against targets in the border areas between the two countries in recent years.

In September, Israel sharply escalated its attacks against Lebanon, after thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies belonging to Hezbollah members exploded.

On October 1, Israel entered Lebanon with ground forces. Iran responded by launching about 180 missiles at Israel. The attack mainly resulted in the destruction of infrastructure.
