According to João Fix, director of the SES's Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate, the growth is related to expanding the scope of testing. In April, the state began testing using specific combinations of yellow fever viruses sent by the Department of Health. Until then, states did not have the autonomy to conduct tests and had to send samples to reference laboratories.

Moreover, according to the diving director, the presence of marum in some municipalities in Santa Catarina facilitated the transmission of the disease, because mosquitoes are the vector of the disease. For example, Luiz Alves came, where most cases were recorded Declare a state of emergency By mosquito invasion. Another 16 incidents are concentrated in Butovera.

—Butovera and Luiz Alves are very suitable for vector breeding. In other words: they have a very dense green area, and they have important agricultural production. Marum multiplies in organic materials, which makes it easier for the disease to occur – explains Fix.

According to the Ministry of Health, marshmallows breed mainly during hot periods in humid environments, such as in areas near mangroves, lagoons, swamps and rivers. Vectors of the disease are also found in urban settings, where water and organic materials are available, especially near vegetable gardens, gardens and trees.

Due to limited diagnostic tools, the Ministry of Health's testing focuses on areas suspected of transmitting the disease. According to the director, the strategy has two fronts:

— When we have municipalities with many suspected arboviruses, but many negative results for dengue, this is an initial warning for the Ministry of Health to send some samples for testing. Another random test, in Lassen (Central Public Health Laboratory), in tests whose results were negative for dengue fever – he explains.
