What if it was the bull that affixed the headband to the bullfighter’s back? Bordalo II tries to answer this question in his last artistic intervention in the bullring of Vila Franca de Xira, which he shared on Wednesday on social networks. To the symbol of the bull displayed on the front of the square, the artist added the image of a bullfighter, bent over the animal’s hooves, with some bands stuck to its back. As if the roles have reversed
“The bull, because he is not very intelligent, does not see the pleasant side of his suffering,” the text mocks through the satirical Jovem Conservador de Direita page, which accompanies the publication. We gave him this opportunity to shine on stage and entertain us and he just doesn’t appreciate it. What matters is that we, who are your superiors in the world of species, take notice.”
This situation marked the second anti-bullfighting demonstration by Bordalo II within one month. About two weeks ago, the artist painted in red the traffic lights indicating directions to the Campo Pequeno bullring that include an illustration of a bullfighter and a bull. At the time, he captioned the Instagram photos and videos of the entry with the caption, “May Campo Pequeno only serves non-barbaró-labregos shows.”
This time, in a more cynical fashion, he criticized those who have publicly advocated that people with an anti-bullfighting stance simply do not go to the event.
“There are those who do not like bullfighting and want to deprive us of the pleasure of enjoying the public torture of an animal. They have a good medicine: do not see. I also do not like that there is hunger in Africa, and for this reason I refuse to see those pictures of children suffering. If I do not see them, it seems It’s as if they don’t exist and I live better with my conscience,” the post can read.
