A few years ago, Hubert Harcaux (ATP 11) and Steve Johnson (ATP 115) were joined by the man of coach Craig Boynton, which is why the two tennis players got to know each other so well. The American, however, parted ways with an experienced coach to try something new. Despite the change, he dropped out of the ATP Top 100 eight years later. On the other hand, he made significant progress during that time and made his debut within the top 10 spots. On Tuesday, “Hobby” and “Stevie” faced off in the third round of the prestigious BNP Paribas Open 2022, and the pole won. 7: 6 (7), 6: 3.
The first set was very close, but both had a chance. In the fourth game, Johnson scored two break points. Hurkacz canceled one service first, the second one was aided by his opponent, and after a while it was already 2. In the 4th position, the pole had two chances. The American had to work hard. He canceled the first break point through the volley in the net, while he scored a point after the second break point was missed by the opponent.
With no break in the premiere, the tie-break became decisive. In this game, events became like a kaleidoscope. After the first change of pages, the humans faced great difficulties in getting points in their own service. Johnson may spit in his cheek for wasting a set ball on his pass. He then sent a forehand into the cars and the Harrocks equalized 6-6. After turning the pages, the 25-year-old from Wroclaw defended another setball. By the end of 7, the Pole had done two very good things in terms of tactics. The American could not bear both exchanges and as a result lost the entire set. The hosts’ angry tennis player then smashed the racquet against the court, for which he received a warning.

The failure of the opening ceremony hit Johnson in the head. At the beginning of the second edition Hargogas made good use of it. He was an excellent attacker on the opponent’s back and neutralized his forearm. The frustrated American lost four points in the second game and sent the pass back. The pole did not confirm the break. The contestant had a break, but “Hobby” saved himself with an ace. After 3-0, our representative played patiently and focused on watching his own pass. 89 minutes later, he finished the game using the second ball.
On Tuesday, the Harks sent 13 aces, with only one double error. In addition, he finished with 20 balls and made 11 forced mistakes. Johnson tried to avoid long trades and took more risks. He made six aces, two double faults, 25 winning strokes and 24 faults. The American did not use any of the three break points, and he was the only one to miss the service. Pole was 11 points (72-61) better than him.
Harrocks defeated Johnson a second time in the professional courts. Prior to this, he was better than him on the grass courts in Eastbourne (2019). Thanks to Tuesday’s win, the Pole advanced to the fourth round of the Indian Wells tournament and has the opportunity to repeat the results from 2019 and 2021. He will play either Russian Andrei Rublev or American Francis Diafo on Wednesday for a place in the quarterfinals.
