This disorder is among the most frequently observed among patients admitted to the unit. The HSM, a government reference for helping people with mental disorders, provides outpatient care to manage and treat symptoms. National Schizophrenia Day is commemorated on Wednesday (24).

According to the psychologist Joao Henrique Cordero, who is active in this sector, only the pharmacological part is not enough to improve patients. “We conduct individual and group psychotherapy, using playful and interactive resources, where people are invited to share experiences and talk about their needs and desires, always mediated by psychologists,” he says.

Music therapy is one of the activities implemented in NOSC that has been well evaluated by the patients. The band’s musical link was created from the meetings. Some people showed many negative symptoms, in addition to difficulty communicating and anxiety. Music therapy was key to alleviating these signs,” Cordero notes.

Of Vitor Moisés’ 31 years, five have been surpassed by care provided on an outpatient basis. For him, the music group is one of his favorite moments. “If I didn’t have this accompaniment and opportunity to play my guitar here with the other guys, I’d be sad. Now I’m already learning the drums. I’ve been trying to compose some songs too. I come every week and really want to stay involved in the band,” he says.

Multidisciplinary treatment

According to psychiatrist Nianna Holland, the peak incidence of the disease usually occurs between the late teens and early adulthood. Men are usually more affected, and monitoring patients with schizophrenia is essential for them to enjoy a quality of life. The Nuesq difference is the multidisciplinary treatment, supported by psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and nutritionists. He stresses that the patient’s family also receives psycho-educational support.

A chronic mental illness, schizophrenia is characterized by distortions of thought and perception, with persecution mania, delusions, apathy, and social isolation.

“Outpatient care is necessary to prevent crises, hospitalization and progression of the disease. When the first signs are noticed, it is very important to seek medical attention to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment as soon as possible.
