Google is preparing to launch its first fully customized Tensor chipset in 2025

Published on

A few years ago, Google unveiled its own Tensor chipset, marking a change of pace for a company that, until then, had mostly relied on companies like Qualcomm to power the chips in its Pixel smartphones. However, despite it being a “custom” chipset, many of its components have been sourced from other companies, such as Samsung. That could change in the coming years.

Tensor segments: a new era for Google

According to a report issued by the information (paywall), Google is expected to launch its first truly dedicated Tensor chipset in 2025, Tensor G5. The company will work with TSMC to make this possible. This means that Google will have to replace components made by other companies with components designed by itself.

Complete control over your Pixel smartphone’s performance

This change should give Google more control over the performance of Pixel smartphones and what the Android operating system can do. Apple is already doing something similar with its chip series and Apple Silicon, where the company has acquired many smaller companies over the years and used its intellectual property to build its own technology.

It’s still a few years away from 2025, and we’re not sure how well our custom Tensor chipset will actually perform on its current versions. However, it is an exciting development that we are following closely.
