The Ford Mustang GTD was introduced this week and surprised a lot of people. This is the most extreme version of the muscle car ever made by the American automaker, being a true masterpiece of automotive engineering. After all, it’s not just a track car made for the streets. Its importance is much greater.
For starters, the Mustang GTD is actually a real Mustang. Production begins at Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan, plant before it’s shipped to renowned engineering firm Multimatic. Multimatic was responsible for building the Ford GT and other high-performance cars, and worked closely with Ford to develop this model.
The heart of the Mustang GTD is its powerful 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, possibly derived from the legendary GT500. At 800 horsepower, it’s the most powerful engine Ford has ever produced for a street-legal Mustang. Additionally, the GTD features dry sump lubrication, allowing for even more impressive performance.
An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is mounted in the rear, ensuring near-perfect weight distribution. The focus on reducing weight is evident throughout the car, with parts such as the fenders, hood, roof, trunk lids, and diffuser all made from carbon fibre. The Mustang GTD also features a tubular rear subframe, which increases stiffness and improves cornering performance.
Aerodynamics is another feature of the car. With 20-inch forged aluminum wheels (optionally available in magnesium), the car has extra-wide front and rear tires, which ensure exceptional grip on the streets. In addition, the semi-active suspension adjusts spring rates and ride height, providing a more exciting driving experience.
The Brembo-branded carbon-ceramic brake system ensures effective and reliable braking, while the variable traction control can be easily adjusted via buttons on the steering wheel. And for the enthusiast who wants a more exclusive touch, it’s possible to customize the GTD with special paint jobs.
Ford expects the GTD to be a true record-breaker in terms of performance. The brand expects you to complete the legendary Nurburgring lap in less than seven minutes.
However, the GTD is not just a vehicle for the racetrack. It is designed to be street legal, allowing drivers to enjoy its full power and thrills anywhere. With an estimated price tag of around US$300,000 (R$1.5 million), production will be limited and the first cars will reach buyers between late 2024 and early 2025.
