To illustrate these benefits, one study gave a powdered version of the mushroom to mice fed a high-cholesterol diet.

Diabetic mice that consumed the supplement for three weeks “significantly reduced glucose and triglyceride concentrations in plasma and blood,” the scientists said.

Blood sugar levels decreased by 24.7% and 39.1% over the three-week period.

The results were published in the Journal of Nutrition Research and also revealed a decrease in liver enzyme activities and an increase in liver weight, suggesting a protective role in fatty liver disease.
