Fuel prices will maintain their downward trend from Monday, both for 95 petrol and diesel. “The development of prices in euros indicates a price decline of 1 cent per liter of 95 gasoline but also 1 cent per liter of diesel,” a source from one of the main national oil companies told Executive Summary.
Prices at gas stations next to supermarkets follow the same line. “The trend will be towards a decrease of 0.0081 euros in gasoline and a decrease of 0.0093 euros in diesel,” another source said.
In the case of diesel, this will be the sixth week in a row that the price has fallen: in that period, it fell from 1,644 to 1,554 euros per liter, minus 9 cents: this is close to the lowest value recorded in 2024, as early as January 8. It reached 1,552 euros per litre. In the case of 95 gasoline, this is the fourth week in a row with a reduction in the bill – from 1,821 to 1,744 euros/litre, that is, 7.7 cents less.
The cost of filling a diesel tank is now lower than it was at the beginning of the year
Since the beginning of the year, the price of diesel has fallen by 0.2 cents per liter, while the price of gasoline has risen by 11.3 cents. This means that filling a 60-litre diesel fuel tank costs €1.2 less than it did 21 weeks ago. Filling a 95-capacity tank of gasoline requires 6.78 euros more than in the first week of January.
Data from the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG) shows that the average price of a liter of petrol in Portugal currently costs €1,754 while diesel costs €1,564. However, prices may vary across gas stations, as the price quoted on the network also takes into account the level of competition, supply and demand in each market and the level of fixed costs at each station.
Portugal is the 11th country with the most expensive gasoline in Europe
In the latest bulletin from the European Commission, Portugal ranks 11th among the countries with the most expensive gasoline in the EU, 2.7 cents less than the European average and 8.5 cents more expensive than Spain. Diesel ranks 15th.
The price difference between Portugal and Spain results from the tax burden, because without taxes the price of gasoline is cheaper in Portugal. Without the tax burden, each liter of 95 gasoline in Portugal would cost 84.9 cents, less than 90.8 cents in Spain.
Among the EU countries, the Netherlands and Denmark have the most expensive 95 gasoline on the Old Continent, both of which cost more than 2 euros: 2,046 and 2,045 euros, respectively. Ireland “reigns” in diesel: 1,775 euros.
