FAPESP launches a new notification for the Scientific Centers for Development Programme


Call expects to provide R$150 million for centers focused on problem-oriented research that is relevant to the SP mandate



FAPESP (São Paulo State Research Support Foundation) announced the opening of the third center Call for proposals To establish scientific centers for development with a total value of R$150 million. Proposals must be submitted via the management support system (wise) until November 28.

The notification will select research projects with social, technological and economic impact, lasting up to five years, to be implemented by teams from research institutes, universities or higher education institutions in the state of São Paulo, in partnership with government bodies, enshrined in Centers of Science for Development. The maximum support amount per project is R$2 million per year.

Proposals must present research projects focused on well-defined problems of social and/or economic importance to the State of São Paulo.

The invitation provides a list of strategic topics, proposed by public bodies (listed in Appendix 1 of the Notice), such as the State Attorney’s Office; Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation; Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply; Department of Health; Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Secretariat of Urban Development and Housing and Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics.

It is possible to submit proposals dealing with other topics relevant to scientific and technological development, but in this case, only proposals that meet all other requirements specified in the notification will be considered for evaluation.

In the first two calls of the program (released on 2019 that it 2021), 28 joint cooperation agreements were selected and implemented, operating within the framework of a joint financing model, with research conducted in the fields of health, energy, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, smart cities, public safety and the environment.

Qualification and co-financing

Proposals should include qualified research teams with extensive national and international research experience, clear and effective governance, review mechanisms and well-defined intermediate success targets.

Each proposal must appoint a responsible researcher and at least one principal investigator, in addition to presenting an executive committee consisting of the responsible researcher, who assumes the role of director of the center, and the deputy director, who must be an appointed researcher.
